A fan is a windward device and a must-have in summer. Chinese traditional fan culture has a profound cultural heritage and is an integrated part of the Chinese national culture. In traditional Chinese society, fans are closely related to the daily lives of the people. The earliest fan in history is the royal ceremonial fan used by the court of the 4th Dynasty in ancient Egypt, which dates back more than 4500 years, and the ceremonial fan and ostrich hair ivory pole ceremonial fan dating back 3300 years unearthed from the King's Tomb KV62 in Valley of the Kings of Egypt.
The types of fans include feather fans, cattail fans, pheasant fans, round fans, folding fans, silk palace fans, mud gold fans, black paper fans, sandalwood fans, and so on. The fan making techniques listed on the national intangible cultural heritage list include sandalwood fans in Suzhou, Jiangsu, Wang Xingji fans in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, folding fans in Rongchang, Chongqing, Gong fans in Zigong, Sichuan, sunflower fans in Xinhui, Guangdong, feather fans in Huzhou, and cypress fans and bat fans in Japan.
